Rafael Devers hit a game winning two-run homerun in the eighth inning on Sunday against Seattle reliever Paul Sewald, as the Boston Red Sox finished off an 8-2 West Coast road trip with a 2-0 victory over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington.
Both starting pitchers didn’t allow anything in their outings, but neither factored into the decision. Kutter Krawford pitched his best game in the majors for Boston, allowing just one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Robbie Ray for Seattle also was good, keeping the Sox scoreless through 7.0 innings on three hits. The game winner by Devers, his 14th homer of the season, came after Rob Refsnyder was hit by a pitch by Sewald with two outs in the eighth. Refsnyder may of made the catch of the season in the bottom half of the inning, robbing Ty France of extra bases with a leaping catch in right field.
Tyler Danish (2-0) picked up the win in relief, as he combined with Ryan Brasier, Austin Davis, John Schreiber, and Tanner Houck on 4.0 innings of one hit scoreless baseball. Houck picked up his second save. Sewald (3-2) took the loss for Seattle, as their record falls to 27-33. Boston comes back home after a sweep in Oakland, and then winning three of four in Los Angeles over the Angels, and two of three from the Mariners. The Red Sox are now 32-29 and will welcome the Athletics to Fenway Park on Tuesday for a three game series and the start of a nine game homestand. Nick Pivetta (5-5, 3.78 ERA) gets the start for Boston in game one with Oakland, to be opposed by left hander Jared Koenig (0-1, 9.00). Starting pitchers Garrett Whitlock and Nathan Eovaldi were both put on the 15 day disabled list during the road trip, and both expected to be out until at least June 24.
