The USA Under 17 team announced their roster for the World Cup in Spain beginning in July, and a familiar name is one of the 12 headed to the games. Newport native Cooper Flagg, who completed his freshman year this past winter with a state championship win at Nokomis Regional High School, will be headed to Spain with 11 others with contests slated to begin July 2. Flagg registered 20.5 points per game, 10 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 3.7 steals, and 3.7 blocks in his season with the Warriors. Cooper and his twin brother Ace Flagg are attending Montverde Academy Prep School in Montverde, Florida.
Flagg is one of two players that made the roster from the Class of 2025. Koa Peat from Arizona is the other. The other 10 is as follows: David Castillo (Oklahoma), Dennis Evans III (California), Jeremy Fears Jr. (Illinois), Johnuel “Boogie” Fland (New York), Ron Holland (Texas), Ian Jackson (New York) Kevin Knox II (Florida), Asa Newell (Florida), Sean Stewart (Florida), and DeJuan Wagner Jr. (New Jersey). Several members of the team won the Gold Medal in the 2021 FIBA U16 Cup in Mexico including Castillo, Fears Jr., Holland, and Jackson. Fland and Evans III were participants in the USA U16 National Team training camp. Additionally Flagg, Peat, Knox, Stewart, and Wagner Jr. have attended previous USA Basketball Junior National Team minicamps. Newell is making his USA Basketball debut.
The three group phase games for the USA are all set for 8:45 p.m. Eastern Time with the first one on Saturday, July 2 with the round of 16 (July 6) and championship round times (July 8 to 10) to be announced. USA is in Group C with Lebanon, Slovenia, and Mali. The other teams are Argentina, Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Serbia, and Spain.
