After a weekend sweep in Cleveland the seven game win streak came to end for the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, as the Toronto Blue Jays hit three homeruns and Kevin Gausman fired 7.0 shutout innings in a 7-2 victory at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Connor Seabold, up from Worcester, got the spot start for Boston on the mound. Bo Bichette hit an RBI double in the first inning for Toronto (41-32), while George Springer (solo homer) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (two-run homer) both went deep in the second inning for a 4-0 Jays lead. Seabold (0-1) ended up allowing all seven runs in 4.2 innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. It was his second career MLB start, first of 2022. The Red Sox (42-32) got both of their runs with the game pretty much already decided in the ninth, on a Trevor Story RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Bobby Dalbec. Gausman (6-6) was on his game, allowing just four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts to earn the win. The right hander has two wins and has only allowed two runs (one earned) in 21.0 innings pitched this season against Boston. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added an RBI groundout, and Matt Chapman a two-run homerun both in the fifth inning. Alex Verdugo, Christian Vazquez, and Dalbec had two hits each in the loss.
Game two of the series is Tuesday at 7:07 p.m. as Michael Wacha (6-1, 2.34 ERA) takes the ball on the hill for Boston, to be opposed by Ross Stripling (4-2, 3.08) for Toronto.
