The Husson men’s basketball program added to a good recruiting class Wednesday, enhancing its backcourt with graduate transfer Taylor Schildroth. Schildroth, 6-1 guard who last played at University of Maine in 2021, is transferring to Husson to pursue his MBA and play a graduate year of basketball.
“We worked hard at recruiting Taylor out of high school and are excited to see him join our program for a graduate year,” said head men’s basketball coach Warren Caruso. “Taylor is a very skilled scorer and a proven winner, he fits well with the student-athletes we have returning and coming in next year”.
Schildroth was named to the Bangor Daily News All-State teams three times including first team all-state in his junior and senior campaigns. The all-time leading scorer at George Stevens Academy finished his career with 1,761 points. Schildroth led the Eagles to three-straight Maine Class C State Championships and a record of 64-2. As a senior in 2018, Schildroth was a finalist for Mr. Maine Basketball and Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.
During his senior year, he averaged 21 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. He set the GSA school record for most points scored in a game against Lee Academy on Jan. 6, 2017. Schildroth dropped 61 points, shooting 20-36 from the field and 12-21 from beyond the 3-point arc. The 61 points was the sixth highest single-game total in Maine history.
Schildroth played two seasons at UMaine. In his final year (2020-21), he played in all nine games (COVID shorten season) starting five. He averaged 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 19.3 minutes of play. Schildroth didn’t play this past season and completed his bachelor’s degree in May.
Schildroth adds to an already strong group of Eagles returning. Point guard Justice Kendall is committed to return for his fifth season and the Eagles anticipate the return of 6-7 stretch forward Scott Lewis to the line-up. Lewis was in a car accident last summer and missed all of the 2021-22 season. In the 2020-21 season, Lewis averaged 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds, while shooting 57.7% from the floor and 38.1% from 3-point range. In all, Husson returns seven of its 10 rotational players from last season.
The Eagles also added plenty of depth with a deep and talented recruiting class from across the country. The talented incoming class consist of Eric Ahlers of Admiral Farragut High School (Fla.), Bryce Tackett of Panama High School (Okla.), Luke Cramer of Paraclete High School (Calif.), DJ Woods of Charlotte High School (Fla.), Johnny Willingham of Countryside High School (Fla.), Ty Henke of Mount Ararat High School (Maine), Gil Monondo of Chattahoochee High School (Ga.), and Jeremiah Grissom of Wilson High School (D.C.).
Husson finished last season at 15-9, winning the North Atlantic Conference Championship. The Eagles have won eight out of the last 12 NAC men’s basketball championships and have made 14 trips to the national tournament in the past 28 years. The Eagles are also the winningest program (by percentage) in NCAA Division III history.
