The Boston Red Sox, after acquiring Tommy Pham and Reese McGuire on Monday, made one more move before the MLB Trade Deadline on Tuesday adding first baseman Eric Hosmer. The team was able to keep their key pieces, especially two that were swirling around the deadline in JD Martinez and Nathan Eovaldi.
Hosmer was originally part of the biggest blockbuster trade of the deadline on Tuesday when Juan Soto and Josh Bell went from Washington to San Diego. Hosmer had a 10-team no trade clause and didn’t accept the trade to the Nationals. Boston then swooped in and grabbed the veteran, who is in his 12th season and was a 2016 All-Star with the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox also acquire two minor leaguers and cash considerations, while in exchange they sent left handed minor league pitcher Jay Groome to San Diego. As part of the deal, the Padres will pay almost all of the remaining $44 million owed to Hosmer that was originally an eight year deal worth $144 million and runs through the 2025 season. Hosmer is a four-time gold glove winner and is hitting .272 with eight homeruns and 40 RBI in 2022. Overall is his career he is a .277 hitter with 196 homeruns and 875 RBI in 1644 games played.
In other Red Sox news, the team optioned Franchy Cordero to Triple A Worcester and put Rob Refsnyder on the IL (knee). Cordero was playing alot at first base this season for Boston, committing eight errors in 17 games started at the position which will now be manned by Hosmer and some by Bobby Dalbec. Rafael Devers is also back from the 10 day IL and in the lineup Tuesday night in Houston.
