Michael Wacha combined with two other pitchers on Thursday night for the first no-hitter in Worcester WooSox history in a 12-0 win over the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) in Triple A International League action at Polar Park in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Abraham Almonte hit his first of two homeruns with a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning for the only run that was needed. Wacha, on a rehab assignment, went the first 4.2 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts throwing 63 pitches (43 strikes). Almonte, Christin Stewart, and former Portland Sea Dog Pedro Castellanos all hit two-run homeruns in the third. Almonte had four hits, Castellanos had three, and Francy Cordero also had three hits with a run knocked in for Worcester (52-50).
Andrew Politi (3-0), also a former Sea Dog, got the win as he walked three and struckout two in 2.1 innings after Wacha exited. Chase Shugart went the final 2.0 innings to finish off the no-hitter. Wacha is expected to join the major league club in Boston sometime next week.
