Former University of Maine forward Mitchell Fossier will be the fifth former Black Bear to suit up for the Maine Mariners of the ECHL, according to the team on Friday morning becoming the first free agent signed to the team this summer.
Last season, former UMaine forwards Ed Tralmaks, Brendan Robbins, Pat Shea, and defenseman JD Greenway spent time with the Mariners. Robbins is still on the current roster. The 25 year old Fossier spent 2021-22 in Slovakia playing with HC Banka Bystrica, where he scored 15 goals and had 12 assists in 38 games and added two goals and two assists in nine playoff games. In 2020-2021, he appeared in 19 games as a rookie with the Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League putting up eight points (five goals, three assists). The native of Alpharetta, Georgia was with the Black Bears from 2016-2020, finishing as a captain his senior year. He led the team in scoring in his sophomore, junior, and senior season putting up 42 points in his last year in Orono. In 143 collegiate games, Fossier finished with 128 points (38 goals, 90 assists).
The Maine Mariners begin their season on October 21st with a road trip to Trois-Rivieres, and will open their home schedule the next night when that face that same Lions club.
