Maine women’s soccer blanks St. Peter’s in season opener

The Maine Black Bears women’s soccer team got goals from four different players on Sunday afternoon, opening their 2022 season with a 4-0 non-conference victory over Saint Peter’s University at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Maine controlled play throughout and got a pair of unassisted goals in the first half by Saylor Clark and Madison Michaud at 36:55 and 43:57 to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Abby Kraemer 3:01 into the second half made it 3-0 with an assist from her sister Kayla Kraemer. Kayla also added a goal of her own with just over three minutes to play off a helper from Jordane Pinette.

Kayla Kraemer was the only multiple point scorer in the game with the goal and an assist in the victory. Kira Kutzinski stopped both shots she faced in net, as Maine had a 20-2 shots on goal advantage. Olivia Mackethan had 16 saves for the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks (0-2). The Black Bears attempted 25 shots compared to just four by SPU, and also had an advantage of 7-2 on corner kick opportunities. Maine will stay at home and play host to Merrimack College on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
