The University of Maine women’s soccer team opened up the America East portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon. Despite outchancing the visiting NJIT Highlanders by a favorable margin, the two teams would settle for a 0-0 draw at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
Maine (4-1-2, 0-0-1 AE) had a 20-3 attempted shots favor, 6-1 shots on goal, and a 6-4 margin in penalty corners. Kira Kutzinski stopped the only chance she saw in net for the Black Bears, with Molly Saylor saving six of six for NJIT (2-3-5, 0-0-1). It was third shutout for Kutzinski in six games. Maine heads out on the road for a 7:30 p.m. match with Sacred Heart in non-conference play on Thursday night.
At Dedham, Massachusetts the Maine Field Hockey team had four different goal scorers in a 4-2 win over the Northeastern Huskies in non-conference action.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Maine (4-3-0) got goals from Chloe Walton, Molly Mackesy, and Sydney Meader in a span of 5:09 in the second and led 3-0 at the half. Northeastern pulled within 3-2 on two goals from Mak Graves, with one early in the third and one early in the fourth quarter. Poppy Lambert put it away for the guests with a penalty stroke tally with 6:32 to play. Walton and Meader also added an assist each in the third straight win for the Black Bears. Mia Borley had five saves in net, while Jonna Kennedy stopped nine in the loss for the Huskies (1-5-0). Maine opens up America East action on Friday when they welcome in UNH for a 3 p.m. start time.
