At Howland on a windy Saturday, Penobscot Valley celebrated homecoming by topping the Woodland Dragons 9-0. It was the second time these teams faced off in the past eight days.
The scoring began just under six minutes into the game, as Emma Potter lifted a corner kick to Ellie Austin. Austin kicked it across the 6-yard line to Ashlyn St. Cyr, who trapped it and put it past keeper Victoria Siering for the 1-0 lead. Rylee Moulton struck next, as she took a beautiful through-ball from Holly Loring, went one on one with the goalie and put it in the left corner. Just two minutes later, Loring’s twin Kaya collected the ball outside the 18 yard line, sidestepped a defender, and put it in the lower right corner with her opposite foot.
A penalty in the box was called at the 25 minute mark, and junior Emma Potter calmly put the penalty kick past the keeper. A breakaway from Brooke Champion was thwarted by Siering, but the deflection found the foot of St. Cyr, who scored her second goal of the game. The final score of the half came from a long forward pass from Austin to Moulton, which led to another break away that Moulton converted, making it a 6-0 halftime lead.
The short-handed Dragons had a stronger second half, holding the Howlers to three goals. The first of which came on another great corner kick by Potter, that Holly Loring quickly trapped and sent past the goalie.
A wide cross from Holly to Austin in the box led to the eighth goal of the game. Junior Aubrey Dionne found Savannah Durost for the game’s final score.
Freshman Lauryn Smart recorded her fourth straight shutout, and turned away two of the three shots she saw. The Howlers improve to 5-0 on the season, and will host the Greenville Lakers on Tuesday. Siering had a busy but strong showing in net for the Dragons, saving 35 of 47 shots. Woodland will host Calais on Wednesday.
