Celtics signing former All-Star Blake Griffin

September 30, 2022

ESPN has reported on Friday morning that the Boston Celtics have signed former All-Star and power forward Blake Griffin to a one year, fully guaranteed contract.

The deal for Griffin is a veteran minimum worth $2.9 million, and a cap hit of $1.8 million for Boston. The Celtics recently attended a workout for Griffin in Los Angeles, and liked what they saw. He played in 56 games for the Brooklyn Nets last season averaging 6.4 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 17 minutes per outing. Boston won’t expect Griffin to recapture his All-Star form, they simply needed more frontcourt depth. Danilo Gallinari is expected to miss most or all the 2022-23 season recovering from a torn ACL, while Robert Williams will be out until at least November or December following knee surgery. Multiple reports said leading up to training camp the Celtics wanted to look at their in-house options before signing a veteran free agent. Several days into camp, looks like they saw the need was necessary to acquire a veteran to help.
