Maine women’s hockey wins, men’s hockey plays exhibition

The University of Maine women’s hockey team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, and the men’s hockey team hit the ice for the first time and was victorious in an exhibition against the University of Prince Edward Island on Saturday night.

At Manchester, New Hampshire Grace Heiting had two goals and an assist to lead the Maine women’s team to a 6-3 victory over Division II Saint Anselm College. Emma Lange, Ally Trimper, Ashley Bialas, and Ida Kuoppala also scored for Maine. Anna Larose picked up a win in net for the Black Bears in her first start with 18 saves. Along with the three points from Heiting, Lange added an assist to go along with her goal, while Grace Parker and Lilli Welcke had two assists a piece. Allie Kelley made 47 saves in the loss for the Hawks, who fall to 0-3.  Maine is now 1-2 and will open Hockey East action when they host New Hampshire next Friday and Saturday.

 

At the Alfond Arena, freshman Killian Kiecker-Olson scored a second period powerplay goal as Maine men’s hockey topped Prince Edward Island 1-0 in a warmup exhibition ahead of their season opener next week.

Maine has 16 newcomers for the 2022-23 season that includes five transfers. The goalie time in the exhibition contest was split between Clarkson transfer Jacob Mucitelli and Victor Ostman who combined to stop 32 shots for the shutout. The Black Bears begin the new season for real on Friday night at 9 p.m. as they head to Colorado to play Air Force, before heading to Denver on Saturday at 8 to face the preseason #1 team in the country in the Pioneers.
