At Howland, Lila Cummings led the way with two goals and an assist as Penobscot Valley remained undefeated with a 5-0 girls soccer win over Bangor Christian.
The scoring started about four minutes into the contest, when senior wing Holly Loring sprinted with the ball up the sideline. Loring sent a line drive kick across the goal box, where it found Cummings. Cummings ripped the low shot into the right hand corner for the score. The second goal started at the other wing, when Ellie Austin struck a beautiful opposite-foot pass across the box with Loring the recipient able to finish it off for the goal.
The Howlers third goal started as a potential scoring opportunity for Bangor Christian, as Grace Lewis took a direct kick at the attacking-end corner of the 18 yard line. Her kick went toward the goal but Cummings was able to head it out of danger. As Cummings sprinted out of the box toward the ball she was able to kick it away from a Patriot’s player, take a few dribbles, and sent a beautiful through-ball up ahead of the defensive line to a streaking Austin. Austin corralled it, went one on one with BC goalie Abby Brown and was able to finish her shot in the left corner. The final goal of the half occurred as a loose ball was rolling at the edge of the 18, and Savannah Durost attacked it with a one-touch that found the left corner of the net.
The second half only consisted of one goal, but it was a spectacular one. Cummings found herself with the ball about 30 yards out, and unleashed a rocket of a shot that went over the keeper’s head and snuck just under the crossbar.
Penobscot Valley goalie Lauryn Smart registered four saves on seven shots in the win. The Howlers now have seven shutouts on the year and improve to 9-0. They will travel to Penquis of Milo on Wednesday.
Abby Brown stopped 14 of 26 shots for Bangor Christian, who drop to 3-4-1 and will host PCHS of Guilford on Saturday.
