At Greenville Friday, Ellie Austin got the scoring started and also registered two assists as Penobscot Valley completed the season sweep over Greenville with a 5-0 girls soccer victory.
The first goal occurred about 19 minutes into the game, when Holly Loring made a strong run up the right flank. As she neared the endline, she fired a high-arcing cross toward the opposite post where Austin got a body on the airborne ball and deflected it into the net. The score remained 1-0 until about five minutes before the half, when Brooke Champion took a shot that was blocked by a Laker defender. The rebound zipped out to Kaya Loring, who put in a perfectly placed shot above the goalkeepers head with her opposite foot.
The Howlers wasted no time in the second half, scoring early and often. Two minutes in, Emma Potter sent a corner kick across the box that was settled by Holly Loring. Loring sent it back to the middle where Austin tapped it to Ashlyn St. Cyr, who one-touched it past goalie Lexi Bjork for the score. Just over a minute later, a long St. Cyr chip was kicked out of the box by a Greenville defender. Lila Cummings received it as she sidestepped an oncoming defender, then blasted in a shot from about 30 yards out, just under the crossbar. The final goal of the game started with another Holly Loring cross from the outside. The ball found Austin’s feet, but her shot was blocked by a defender. Austin got the ball back and sent it across where Bjork dove to get a fingertip on it, but Rylee Moulton was there to send it into the open net.
PVHS improves to 10-0-1 with the win, and recorded their 9th shutout of the season. Goaltender Lauryn Smart saved both shots she saw. The Howlers will travel to PCHS to play an evening game under the lights on Tuesday.
Greenville now sits at 4-7-1, and will travel to Searsport on Tuesday. Bjork stopped 16 of 35 shots for the Lakers.
