In Bangor Monday, senior twins Holly and Kaya Loring combined for three goals and two assists in their last regular season road soccer game to help lift Penobscot Valley over Bangor Christian 5-1.
PVHS had a lot of attacks at the net early on, but the B.C. defense and goalie Abigail Brown kept them from scoring. About 14 minutes into the game, Bangor Christian’s Grace Lewis received a pass at the top of the circle and put one low and on frame that got by goalkeeper Lauryn Smart for the early 1-0 lead. It was the first time Penobscot Valley had trailed in a game the entire season.
The goal seemed to awaken the Howlers however, as a mere 22 seconds later they scored the equalizer. The attack started on the kickoff as the ball was dropped to the center-back Allie LeBlanc, who passed to Rylee Moulton at midfield. Moulton sent a lead pass up the wing to Holly Loring, who raced up the sideline and got a step on her defender. Holly’s cross found Ellie Austin, who one-touched the ball into the left corner.
PVHS would score three more times in a matter of four minutes, starting at the 17:26 mark. Lauren Veino’s throw-in from mid-field hit Austin in stride up the left sideline. Austin made a great cross with her opposite foot across the box to Holly Loring, who also used her opposite foot to finish the shot. Less than a minute later, Holly scored again this time finishing off a beautifully placed airborne corner kick from Emma Potter. The final goal of the half was once again from an outside-in attack. Ashlyn St. Cyr’s throw-in up the sideline found Holly Loring, who dribbled toward the endline and sent a low cross near the 6 yard-line where Austin one-touched it past Brown.
The only goal of the second half came from Holly’s sister Kaya, who plays primarily defense. After a Lila Cummings cross forced Brown off the goal line, Moulton attempted to put it on frame. A Patriot defender filled in behind the goalie to clear it, where it went to Kaya. Kaya’s low shot was deflected by a different defender, only to find its way to the back of the net.
Lauryn Smart shook off the first goal (and her first deficit of the season) to stop four of five shots for the Lady Howlers. PVHS improves to 12-0-1 on the year, and are scheduled to play a make-up game with Mattanawcook Academy on Tuesday in Howland. It’ll be “senior-night” for Penobscot Valley’s two seniors, Kaya and Holly Loring, as well as manager McKenzie Michaud.
Bangor Christian drops to 4-7-2 on the year, and are scheduled to conclude their regular season at Narraguagus Tuesday. Abigail Brown was busy in the net for the Patriots, stopping 24 of 39 shots.
