Miguel Morales scored a game winning goal with 8:25 left in the second half on Friday evening, as the Husson Eagles defeated the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 3-2 in a North Atlantic Conference East Division men’s soccer semifinal game played at Boucher Field in Bangor.
Husson (13-3-2), the #1 seed and the host for the tournament, would carry most of the play. The Eagles got a first half goal from Mario Alvarez in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break. The Mariners on their first shot on goal of the night would tie it when Ronald Morgan tallied 17 minutes into the second half. Alvarez put Husson back in front for good 11 minutes later with his second goal on a direct kick that rocketed past MMA goalie Trevor Gray. Morales then made it 3-1 with the eventual game winner with 8:26 remaining. The guests did cut it to a goal on a score from Brad McKechnie with 2:31 to play, but simply ran out of time.
Alex Rechsteiner won in net for Husson, but didn’t record any saves as MMA scored on both shots on net. Alejandro Mora added one assist. Gray made nine saves in the loss for the Mariners, who end their season with a record of 5-10-1. The Eagles will play #3 seed Thomas College in the East Division Championship on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Boucher Field. The Terriers eliminated UMaine-Farmington in penalty kicks in the second semifinal on Friday night. Husson beat Thomas 2-0 in their only regular season meeting.
