The Husson University Eagles never trailed Saturday afternoon, intercepting Western New England quarterback Bryce Karstette three times and sacking him four times to take a 27-17 victory at the Winkin Complex in Bangor in Commonwealth Coast Conference football action.
The teams traded touchdowns over the first two quarters as it was tied 7-7 at the half. Jed Lober scored on a one yard run for Husson in the first, while Western New England evened it on a Dillon Kohl four yard run in the second. The Eagles pushed ahead for good on a 68 yard TD pass from Nic Visser to Jon Bell in the third quarter. The Golden Bears cut it to 20-17 with 8:23 left in the game, before the hosts finished off a third straight win when Visser tossed an eight yard scoring pass to Dom Wilson with 3:46 remaining. It is the first ever win for Husson over Western New England in program history.
Visser went 19-23 passing for 245 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the win, and also had a six yard scoring run. Lober carried 28 times for 96 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Thompson led Husson in receptions with six for 90 yards, while Bell finished with four grabs for 96 yards and the long touchdown. Junior Tucker Buzzell continued his great season leading the defense with 15 tackles, one sack, and an interception. Antwan Turner had 10 tackles and an interception, while Evan DeRonsle also had an pick. Karstette passed for 257 yards (29-50) with one touchdown, but was sacked four times and threw three interceptions in the loss. Kohl had 68 yards rushing with a touchdown, and Ian Britt led the Golden Bears receiving core with three catches for 56 yards and a score. WNEU drops to 3-5, 2-2 in conference play. Husson is now 4-4 overall, 3-1 in the CCC and plays Nichols College in their final regular season home game next Saturday at 12 noon.
