Marila Corletta scored a game winning goal on a free kick in the second half Saturday afternoon, as the top seeded Husson Eagles defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 3-1 in a North Atlantic Conference Eastern Division women’s soccer semifinal at Boucher Field in Bangor.
Husson outmatched UMPI in control and chances, attempting 24 shots on the afternoon to just five for the Owls. The Eagles also had an 8-2 advantage on shots on goal, but would settle for just a slim 1-0 halftime advantage when Charlotte Messer scored in the 35th minute. Corletta scored the game winner 18:45 into the second half. UMPI did cut it to 2-1 when Camryn Ala tallied with 2:12 left to play, but Devon St. Louis answered that 37 seconds later to send Husson into the Eastern Division Final.
Alexis Thayer and Natalie Aviolla also added an assist each in the win, while goaltender Madison Weigler was also victorious in net despite not recording any saves. Savanah Rodriguez made five stops in the loss for #4 UMPI, who ends their season at 6-4-4. Husson is now 10-6-1 and will play Maine Maritime Academy at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon for the NAC East Division Championship. The Mariners defeated UMaine-Farmington 2-0 in the second semifinal on Saturday. The women’s team joins the men’s team who are also going for the title against Thomas College at noontime on Sunday.
