The University of Maine men’s and women’s hockey teams were in action Friday night in Hockey East play. The men were on the road at #19 Merrimack, while the women hosted Holy Cross.
At Alfond Arena in Orono, the Maine women’s team got a first period goal by Rachel Enzler and that is all they needed in a 4-0 victory over the visiting Holy Cross Crusaders. The Black Bears broke it open by scoring three times in the third period. Mira Seregely, Alyssa Wruble, and Ally Johnson all got into the scoring column in the final 20 minutes. Seregely had two points on the night with one goal and one assist, while Kennedy Little, Courtney Colarullo, Emma Lange, Ava Stenvenson, and Lilli Welcke all had one assist each. Brooklyn Oakes got the shutout in net with 25 saves, as Maine improves to 7-7, 5-4 in Hockey East. Brooke Loranger made 46 stops in the loss for Holy Cross, who drops to 2-10-1, 1-8-0 in the league. The teams finish off their two game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
At Lawler Rink in North Andover, Massachusetts a first period goal at 12:24 by Matt Copponi was enough to push the #19 Merrimack College Warriors to a 1-0 victory over Maine in men’s action. The Black Bears had a 33-23 shots on goal edge in the game, but it was goaltender Hugo Ollas outdueling Victor Ostman by stopping all 33 shots he faced for the shutout. Maine has now lost four in a row, falling to 2-7-1 and 0-4-1 in Hockey East. Alex Jeffries and Slava Demin each had an assist on the winning goal by Copponi, as the Warriors now improve to 7-3, 5-1 in league play. Game two on the weekend is set for Saturday night at 7 p.m.
