AUGUSTA- Michael McGonagle scored a game winning touchdown with 32.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter on Saturday, as the Yarmouth Clippers won the 8-man large school state championship with a 30-26 victory over the Waterville Panthers on Fuller Field at Cony High School. McGonagle and fellow running back Spencer Labrecque both had two touchdowns.
After Yarmouth had gained control with a 24-12 lead in the third quarter on a second TD run by Lebrecque, Waterville scored the next two touchdowns including a Gage Hubbard 56 yard interception return for a score to give them a 26-24 advantage headed to the fourth. Yarmouth converted on two fourth downs during the game winning drive, that started at their own 35 yard line with 5:50 remaining to play. They wrapped up the victory when Rufus McVane recovered an unintentional squibbed onside kick on the ensuing kickoff after the McGonagle touchdown. The gold ball for the Clippers is their first since they won it back to back in Class C in 2010 and 2011. They finish with a 10-1 record. Waterville, the North Champ, ends the season at 6-4.
