The UMaine men’s and women’s hockey teams both finished off their two game Hockey East weekend on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.
At the Alfond Arena Saturday afternoon, Mira Seregely scored a game winning second period goal as Maine finished a two game sweep over Holy Cross 4-1. Elise Morphy also scored and Luisa Welcke had a pair of goals. Brooklyn Oakes played most of the game (54:33) in net and made 22 saves, while Anna Larose stopped four in the final 5:27. The Black Bears improve to 8-7, 6-4 in Hockey East. Alexia Moreau scored for Holy Cross and Madison Beck made 37 saves. The Crusaders drop to 2-11-1, 1-9-0 in the league. Maine is at Providence next week for a two game series on Friday and Saturday.
At Lawler Rink in North Andover, Massachusetts Zach Bookman scored a game winning second period goal, as #19 Merrimack completed a sweep with a 5-3 win over Maine. The Black Bears were battling in a 1-1 game in the first period, before Will Calverley scored at 14:16 and Matt Capponi tallied on the powerplay at 19:59 to make it 3-1 Warriors. The Bookman goal made it 4-1 and it was too much for Maine to dig out of. The guests did slice it to 4-3 on goals by Felix Trudeau in the second and Lynden Breen in the third, but couldn’t find the equalizer as the hosts added an empty netter late. Trudeau and Breen each had a goal and an assist in the loss, and Victor Ostmade 16 saves. It was the fifth straight defeat dropping their record to 2-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in Hockey East. Capponi had two goals and Zachary Borgiel made 25 saves in the win for Merrimack. The Warriors are now 8-3, 6-1 in the conference. Maine now has two weeks off before hosting American International on Saturday, November 26th at 2:05 p.m.
