Junior center Bailey Donovan scored a game high 22 points on Wednesday night, including her 1,000th in her career as the Husson University Eagles rolled to a 69-41 non-conference women’s basketball win over the University of Southern Maine in the home opener at Newman Gymnasium in Bangor. Donovan became the fastest player to reach 1,000 points in program history (59 games).
Donovan entered the game needing 12 points to reach the plateau, and did so with 3:24 left in the opening quarter. Husson (2-2) never trailed and used a huge first half to stretch their lead out to a 44-23 halftime advantage to bury the Huskies early in picking up their second win of the early season. Donovan added 16 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals to her point total. Junior Makaelyn Porter also contributed 13 points. USM (1-2) was led by Ashley Aceto and Vanessa Vaughan who had 10 points a piece. The Eagles head back on the road to Standish on Saturday for a matchup with Saint Joseph’s College at 1 p.m.
