Wyatt Rayfield ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and Caden Crocker also scored three touchdowns on Saturday as the Foxcroft Academy Ponies won their second straight Class D football state title with a 41-22 victory over Lisbon at Cameron Stadium in Bangor.
Foxcroft (10-1) looked as if they may run away with the game in the first half. A pair of quarterback keepers of 3 and 4 yards by Rayfield made it 14-0 Ponies in the first quarter. Crocker and Kemsley Marsters helped add to that in the second. Crocker had a 51 yard touchdown run after a Lisbon fumble, and Marsters scored on a 28 yard run to make it 28-0. Foxcroft was driving to try to extend on that, but Lisbon got a fourth down stop. The Greyhounds used that stop to get on the board before the halftime break on a 3 yard run by Josh Carter, and was successful on the two-point conversion.
Lisbon would then make the game very interesting in the third quarter. Colby Levasseur scored on a 6 yard run, and then the Greyhounds recovered an onside kick inside Foxcroft territory. Levasseur found the endzone again from 8 yards out, and with their second successful two-point conversion it was suddenly a 28-22 score with 2:28 left in the quarter. The Ponies turned the momentum back in their favor however. After being stopped and going three and out, Marsters punted and it was downed at the Libson 1 yard line. The very next play the Greyhounds turned it over for a fourth time on the day on a fumble that was recovered by Marsters. Crocker went in for six on a short yardage run on the next snap. A Lisbon drive was stopped on a fourth down play deep in Foxcroft territory in the fourth quarter, and Crocker would later put it away with a 4 yard reception for a TD on a pitch pass from Rayfield with 2:45 left to play.
Rayfield went 11-13 passing for 129 yards and one touchdown. He also added six runs for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Crocker had an excellent all around effort. The senior had six rushes for 56 yards and two touchdowns, eight receptions for 107 yards and a score, and also had eight tackles on defense. DJ Scheel also had 8.5 total tackles and Hunter McSorley had eight. Levasseur led Lisbon in the loss with 31 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Carter also went over 100 yards with 27 rushes for 114 yards and a score. The Greyhounds, who sent Foxcroft to their only loss during the regular season, finishes their year with a record of 7-4. It is the ninth overall state title for the Ponies, but the first time they’ve won it back to back in school history.
