Orono started fast and rolled to a 60-35 win over Central in a preseason boys basketball game in the mid-afternoon slate of the Smokey Lawrence Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Brewer High School.
Orono came out with their hair on fire, as they jumped to a quick 13-0 lead behind stellar defense and team-focused offense. The defense continued the rest of the half as Central would put up only 13 points on 4-16 shooting, and Orono would shoot 16-27 and end the half with 35 points. Orono wouldn’t let up in the second half despite mixing up lineups, they were able to outscore the Red Devils 25-22 behind leading scorers Pierce Walston, Sebastian Vanidestine, and Matt Allen who all had four points in the final half. Walston led the Riots with 14 on 7-12 shooting from the field. Will Francis would lead the team in assists (4), rebounds (12), and steals (5). Jackson Pollock would lead the Red Devils with 10 points and two assists on 3-12 shooting, while Kolby Bean and Nick Masters would lead the team with two rebounds each.
