Makayla Emerson scored a game high 22 points on Thursday night, and the Old Town Coyotes built a 30 point halftime lead in cruising to a Class B Big East girls basketball win over the Hermon Hawks 67-23 at Hermon High School.
Old Town (3-0) never trailed. Leading 6-4 in the first quarter, the Coyotes would go on a 14-2 run to open up a 20-6 lead. They had a 24-9 advantage after the first period, and then outscored Hermon 17-2 in the second that included eight points from Sage Evans to stretch it to 41-11 at the halftime break. Emerson also had 15 of her 22 in that first half. They continued to pour it on in the second half outscoring the Hawks 26-12, as Hermon had no answer. The 44 point margin of victory was the largest lead of the night. The game was a rematch of the 2022 Class B Northern Maine Championship won by Hermon 45-30 back in February. They’ll meet again on January 10 in Old Town.
Emerson poured in four 3-pointers on 9-14 shooting on the night in leading Old Town to the win. Evans finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Gabrielle Cote would add 11 points. Bella Bowden had eight points and Brooke Gallop contributed seven points in the loss for 2-1 Hermon. The Coyotes return to action for their home opener on Tuesday when they battle Washington Academy at 7 p.m. The Hawks are scheduled to host Caribou on Saturday at 3 p.m. weather permitting.
