In Howland, the PVHS boys basketball team jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter lead and never looked back, knocking off the visiting PCHS Pirates 54-38.
Nate Scharff got the Howlers on the board on the opening possession, as he finished a driving layup at the hoop. Gabe Reed led all scorers in the quarter with five, as he converted two tough layups in traffic one for a traditional “and-1” play. Juniors Colin Harding and Colin Dunn both chipped in with a basket during the frame, while Brady Gaw’s midrange jumper was the only points for PCHS.
The Howlers extended their lead in the second quarter, led by Isaac Doore’s six points from a traditional 3-point play and a 3-pointer beyond the arc. Caleb Moon and Scharff converted on a basket apiece. The Pirates received all of their points from junior Ben Higgins, who also notched traditional and long-distance 3-point plays.
PCHS would not give up easily, as they outpaced the Howlers in the 3rd quarter by a score of 18-14. Junior Scott Chadbourne started taking over, scoring 10 of his game-high 18 points during the period. Higgins splashed two more 3’s, while Ty Cobb scored in the paint. Penobscot Valley had three points each from Kaden Loring, Moon, and Dunn, and Reed scored another bucket.
In the fourth, even with Chadbourne connecting for eight more points, the Howlers were able to stretch the lead and get the win, with 13 of their 22 points coming from the charity stripe. Scharff and Dunn had six points each, and Reed finished with five. Doore and Harding each scored two points. Other scorers for Piscataquis were Gaw’s three points and Noah Kain’s free throw.
PVHS’ leading scorers were Reed (12), Dunn (12), Scharff (10), Doore (8), Moon (5), Harding (4), and Loring (3). Quincy Delano-Haynes, David Herlihy, Noah Austin, Ryan Dawson, and Chase Osgood also saw some action. The Howlers improve to 2-4 on the young season and travel to Lee on Wednesday.
PCHS was led by Chadbourne’s 18 points, all of which occurred after halftime. Other scoring came from Higgins (12), Gaw (5), Cobb (2), and Noah Kain, while Gabe Soctomah, Dawson Simpson, Gaige Tracy, and Max Dahn played as well. The Pirates also have Lee Academy as their next opponent as they will host the Pandas on Monday.
