Brady Saunders scored a game high 27 points, with 17 of those coming in the second half on Thursday night as the Brewer Witches improved to 9-0 with a 78-51 win over the Nokomis Warriors in a Class A North boys basketball matchup played at Brewer High School.
After Nokomis scored first, Brewer ran off 10 points in a row in the first quarter capped off by a Cam Hughes basket. The Witches led 20-9 after the opening eight minutes. The hosts scored seven in a row to start the second on a three-point play by Brock Flagg, a basket by Ryder Goodwin, and another bucket from Flagg to extend the lead to 18. The Warriors got within 12 on an Alex Grant three-pointer late in the period, but would trail 35-21 at halftime.
Saunders started to take over in the third quarter, as he scored the first six points of the second half as Brewer increased their advantage to 20 at 41-21. Nokomis never got the lead below 17 after that, and the Witches would lead by as many as 29 late in the contest.
Saunders as part of his 27 points didn’t miss a shot in the second half, 7-7 from the floor (3-3 three-pointers) and he had four from long distance on the night. Flagg finished with 15 points, and Goodwin chipped in 11. Grant and Madden White led Nokomis in the loss with 13 points a piece, while Grady Hartsgrove contributed 10 points. The Warriors fall to 6-3. Nokomis is back in action Friday night at home against Camden Hills at 6:30, while Brewer will also be at home on Monday afternoon at 3 against Lawrence.
