The Maine Black Bears had five different goal scorers on Saturday night, and earned a weekend men’s Hockey East split with a 5-3 victory over the #16 UMass-Lowell Riverhawks at Alfond Arena in Orono.
Maine scored three times in a span of 6:36 of the first period to take a 3-0 lead. David Breazeale at 4:58 on the powerplay, and then Brandon Holt and Aidan Carney at 8:04 and 11:34 even strength. Brian Chambers got UMass-Lowell back within a goal when he tallied at 15:06 of the first, and then at 1:55 of the second period. Lynden Breen notched the eventual game winner for the Black Bears at 7:16 of the middle period for a 4-2 advantage. Matt Crasa made it a one goal game again at 17:53 on the powerplay for the Riverhawks. The guests had a great chance to tie it or more when they got a five minute major powerplay that began early in the third period. Part of that though got nullified when they took a penalty of their own. Despite some good chances on Maine goaltender Victor Ostman, they were unable to find the equalizer and Ben Poisson wrapped up the Black Bears victory with an empty net goal with 12 seconds left.
Poisson had a goal and an assist in the win, while Luke Antonacci had two assists, and Samuel Duerr, Didrik Henbrandt, Michael Mancinelli, Felix Trudeau, and Justin Michaelian contributed one assist each. Ostman made 25 saves in net, as Maine improves to 9-10-2 and 3-6-1 in Hockey East. Along with the two goals from Chambers, Carl Berglund added two assists in the loss for UMass-Lowell. Gustavs Davis Grigals made 30 stops, as the Riverhawks record slips to 12-9-1, 6-5-1 in conference play. The Black Bears head back out on the road next weekend when they visit Boston University for two games on Friday and Saturday night.
