Since suffering a preseason injury, junior Caleb Moon has spent the past 4 weeks slowly working his way back into the starting Penobscot Valley rotation. Saturday in Howland, his hot shooting helped pave the way for a 45-32 victory over Greenville. Moon connected on five 3-pointers for a career-high 15 points on the afternoon, as the Howlers were able to salvage the season split against the Lakers.
The first quarter went back and forth, as Penobscot Valley led by one after eight minutes, 7-6. Points in the quarter came from Moon (3), Kaden Loring (2), and Colin Harding (2), while Greenville sharpshooters Dominick Murray and Liam Mason each connected on a three. The Howlers were able to take a 24-16 point lead into the half, riding nine points from Moon (3 three-pointers) during the frame. Harding and Loring each scored another bucket in the 2nd, along with a short jumper from Issac Doore and two free throws from Nate Scharff. Mason helped keep his team in the game with seven more points, while Lance Owens hit a three.
PVHS used a 12-7 third quarter to stretch their lead to 13, this time led by seven points from Doore. Scharff hit a three pointer and Loring hit an inside basket as well. Center Devin O’Connor hit a mid range jumper for Greenville, and Murray and Mason scored three & two respectively. The fourth quarter was deadlocked at nine points apiece, with the Howlers getting contributions from five players including a driving layup by Gabe Reed, while Mason & Murray scored the Lakers only baskets.
After losing four of their first five games, Penobscot Valley has now won four of five to improve to 5-5. Besides 15 from Moon, other scorers for the Howlers include Doore (10), Scharff (6), Loring (6), Harding (6) and Reed (2). PVHS will travel to Millinocket on Wednesday to face Stearns. Mason netted a game-high 16 points for the Lakers, and also got contributions from Murray (11), Owens (3), and O’Connor (2). Greenville slipped to 3-7, and will host Valley on Tuesday.
