The University of Maine men’s and women’s hockey teams continued Hockey East play over the weekend, as the men’s team visited #5 Boston University and the women were at home against BU and Boston College.
At Agannis Arena in Boston on Friday, Boston University scored two goals in the first 4:05 of the first period and never looked back in beating Maine 5-1. Cole Hanson scored the only Black Bears goal after it was already 4-0 late in the second. Luke Tuch, Matt Brown, Nick Zabaneh, Jay O’Brien, and Devin Kaplan had the tallies for the Terriers. Lynden Breen and Ben Poisson had assists on the marker by Hanson, and Victor Ostman made 28 saves in the loss. Lane Hutson added two assists for BU, and Drew Commesso made 30 stops in net.
On Saturday in a wild game, BU would take a 9-6 victory for the weekend sweep. The Terriers scored four times in the first 14:45 of the first period, before Maine scored three in a row over the final 2:28. After Jeremy Wilmer made it 5-3 Terriers at 2:41 of the second, Breen and Didrik Henbrandt would score for Maine at 5:54 and 7:49 to tie it 5-5. Ty Gallagher regained the advantage for the hosts at 13:09, and they then would score the first three goals of the third period to put it away. Breen, Nolan Renwick, and Donovan Villeneuve-Houle all had a goal and an assist in the loss for the Black Bears. Jakub Sirota had two assists. Ostman was pulled after allowing the first three goals in 7:56 of ice time, and Connor Androlewicz in relief took the defeat as he would allow six tallies in the final 52 minutes. Commesso also was pulled in the second period for Boston University after allowing five to get past him on 17 shots, and Vinny Duplesis was credited with the victory stopped nine of 10 shots in the last 28:26. Wilmer led the way with two goals and an assist, while Quinn Hutson had one goal and two assists. The Terriers improve to 17-6, 11-4 in Hockey East while the Black Bears are now 9-12-2, 3-8-1 in league play. Maine will host Providence next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
At the Alfond Arena on Friday evening, Julia Nearis scored a third period goal that forced overtime and Maine and Boston University would end in a 3-3 tie. The Terriers did earn an extra point in the standings with a 2-1 shootout victory. Mira Seregely, Grace Heiting, and Rachel Enzler scored for the Black Bears. Seregely added one assist and Enzler had two. Anna LaRose made 27 saves in net. Callie Shanahan made 27 stops as BU goes to 7-15-2, 6-12-2 in Hockey East.
On Saturday afternoon at the Alfond, Seregely scored 42 seconds into overtime as Maine beat #15 Boston College 2-1. Seregely also had the first goal of the game in the first period as she did on Friday, before Caroline DiFiore evened it for the Eagles in the second. Courtney Colarullo, Emma Lange, Enzler, and Alyssa Wruble each had an assist for the Black Bears and LaRose made 36 saves. Abigail Levy had 29 stops in the loss for BC, as they fell to 14-11-1, 12-9-0 in Hockey East. Maine now has a record of 12-14-1, 9-10-1 in conference as they end a five game winless streak. The Black Bears during the game also celebrated 25 years of being a varsity Division I program. Maine will host Connecticut next Friday afternoon at 2 at the Alfond, and Providence on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Norway Savings Arena in Auburn.
