The Husson University Eagles traveled north for a men’s and women’s North Atlantic Conference basketball doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Wieden Gymnasium in Presque Isle against the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls.
In the women’s game- Husson used a 17-0 run that started in the third quarter and went into the fourth to break open a close game to take a 70-49 win over UMPI. After a three-pointer by Emily Wheaton with 2:40 left in the third quarter pulled the Owls within 42-38, the Eagles scored the final eight points of the period on a Lauren Cook three-pointer and then a three-pointer and two foul shots by Sophia McVicar. The guests then scored the first nine points of the fourth to take a 21 point lead in picking up their 10th conference win. Vanessa Duarte led three players in double figures in the victory with 12 points. Bailey Donovan had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and McVicar also finished with 10 points. Husson is now 16-6, 10-1 in the NAC. Wheaton and Alexis Ireland both had 10 points in the loss for UMaine-Presque Isle. Ireland added 11 rebounds, as the Owls dropped to 10-7 and 5-3 in conference play.
In the men’s game- Much like the women’s contest, a scoring spurt broke open a close game and this time it was UMPI who made the second half spurt to pick up a win. Husson led 37-36 at the half, before the Owls battled back to take a 10 point lead with 14:52 left. The Eagles got within 59-54 on a three point play by Jeremy Moronta with 9:41 remaining, but then hosts took over after that with a 20-6 run over the next 5:36 to put the game away. Moronta had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Husson in the loss. Scott Lewis added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Eric Ahlers also got into double figures with 10 points and five rebounds. The Eagles had their three game win streak snapped in the defeat falling to 10-12 and 8-3 in the NAC. Dany Harris led all scorers with 22 points and seven rebounds in the victory for UMaine-Presque Isle. KJ Minter contributed 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Griffin Guerrette also chipped in with 10 points. The Owls are now 7-12 and 4-6 in the conference.
The Husson men’s and women’s teams return home to Bangor on Friday and Saturday where each squad will play two games against Northern Vermont-Lyndon at Newman Gymnasium.
