Aidan McDonough scored the only goal needed in the shootout on Monday night, lifting the Northeastern Huskies to their fourth Beanpot Title in the last five years with a 3-2 victory over the Harvard Crimson at TD Garden in Boston.
Northeastern (14-10-5) after a scoreless first period would break the deadlock as Gunnar Fontaine scored at 1:25 of the second. Matt Coronato would tally the next two goals to give Harvard the lead. The first one came on the powerplay at 2:58, and then he scored one at 8:52 even strength to give the Crimson a 2-1 advantage headed to the third period. Fontaine sent it to overtime as he took a centering pass and neatly shoveled it backhanded past Harvard goalie Mitchell Gibson at 4:57 of the third period. The Huskies had the better of chances in the overtime period, three of them to be exact. Vinny Borgesi had a breakaway just over a minute into the five minute extra session but was turned away. Later, Sam Colangelo had a good shot in the low slot that Gibson got with his pad and then Justin Hryckowian had a breakaway that also couldn’t be converted as it then went to a shootout to decide the championship. McDonough scored on a quick wrister stick side on Gibson in round two of the shootout, and then NU goalie Devon Levi made it three for three on save attempts by stopping Alex Laferriere to give his team the title. The game officially ends as a tie NCAA and record wise as Harvard is now 17-6-2. The third place game was won by Boston College earlier in the evening, 4-2 over Boston University.
