BANGOR- Ethan Daigle scored five points in the fourth quarter, including going 3-4 from the free throw line to help the second seeded Fort Kent Warriors hold off George Stevens for a 38-36 win in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C boys basketball quarterfinal game played on Monday night.
Fort Kent jumped out to a 10-2 lead, before George Stevens scored the final eight points of the first quarter to even the score at 10. Daigle nailed a three pointer to start the second quarter for the Warriors, as he had had nine points in the period as Fort Kent outscored the Eagles 16-4 and took a 26-14 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was a battle of strong defense and struggling offenses as George Stevens outscored Fort Kent 6-1 to climb within 27-20 heading into the final quarter. The Eagles climbed within 33-31, before Daigle put in a hoop to expand the lead to 35-31. After Azaiah Nanson made one or two from the foul line, Daigle made two from the line to expand the lead to 37-32. Sam Lorio made 2-2 from the line and Nanson made a basket to get the Eagles within 37-36. George Stevens had two chances to take the lead but the Warriors defense withstood the challenge and Daigle made a free throw to give Fort Kent the two point victory.
Nanson led the Eagles with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Lorio added nine points. George Stevens finished the season with a 14-6 record.
Daigle led the Warriors with 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Lance Gagnon pulled down 12 rebounds. Fort Kent (15-4) will play Dexter in a semifinal game Thursday night at 7 PM.
