BANGOR- The Southern Aroostook Warriors put eight players in the scorebook on Monday morning with four in double figures, and rolled to a 62-12 Maine Principals’ Association Class D girls quarterfinal win over the Ashland Hornets at the Cross Insurance Center.
Southern Aroostook scored the first 11 points of the game as they led 17-5 after one quarter behind eight early points from Cami Shields. The Warriors started the second on a 13-2 spurt to increase the advantage to 23, behind seven points from Madison Russell and six more from Cami Shields. They had a 38-8 halftime lead, and the defending state champions were never challenged in the second half advancing to a Wednesday semifinal.
Cami Shields led the way in the win with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Madison Russell, Ally Shields, and Madison Shields each had 10 points. Callie Russell added six points, Libby Anderson had four, Olivia Ellingwood two, and Hannah McGary had a foul shot for one point for top seeded and now 16-3 Southern Aroostook. The Warriors play Deer Isle-Stonington on Wednesday night at 8:35 p.m. Abby Doughty had five points and six rebounds for Ashland. Also scoring was Kayla Maclean with four points, Macy Maclean with two, and Haily Poulin added a free throw for one point. Poulin also had seven rebounds, as the #8 Hornets end their season with a record of 9-11.
