Indiana senior forward MacKenzie Holmes was named as an Associated Press First Team All-American the school announced on Wednesday.
The former Gorham (Maine) High School standout earlier this season was named Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year and also made the All-Big 10 First Team in the annual postseason conference awards. According to Indiana, it was the second time Holmes was selected as All-Big 10 in her career. She is averaging 22.3 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks while also shooting 68.8% from the floor during this senior season. She is also up for other national awards including a semifinalist for the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy, a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award, and is on the ballot for the Wooden Award as well. “Holmes has led the Hoosiers in scoring on 24 occasions this season”, the release stated. “She has scored in double figures in all 30 games, scoring 20 points 17 times and has three 30-point scoring efforts this season. She led the league in blocks (56) and blocks per game (1.9) and averages 1.1 steals (33) per game.”
Holmes graduated from Gorham High School in 2019 when she led her team to a pair of state championships, and also won Gatorade Player of the Year her senior year. Indiana (27-3) has earned the #1 seed in the Greenville, South Carolina region of the NCAA Women’s Tournament and will play either Tennesse Tech or Monmouth both 16 seeds in the first round on Saturday.
