April 13, 2023

The Husson Eagles softball team finally opened up their home schedule under beautiful sunny skies and warm temperatures at O’Keefe Field in Bangor on Thursday afternoon, as they welcomed in Plymouth State for a non-conference doubleheader. At the end of the day, Husson would sweep the two games and extend their win streak to 10.

Game 1- The story was McKenna Smith in the circle for Husson. The senior right hander and Old Town native only allowed three baserunners on one hit and two walks to go along with 17 strikeouts in a complete game effort as the hosts rolled to a 6-0 win. Smith struckout the side four times including the first nine batters, as the only Plymouth State hit was a bunt single by Kaity Montelongo to lead off the fourth inning. The Eagles got all they needed when Kiara McLeod hit a two-run single in the first. Bulla McCabe added a second inning RBI single, and Jill Bisson had a two-run single in the fifth to back Smith (10-4). Nicole Lebrun (1-3) suffered the pitching loss for the Panthers.

Game 2- Katie Raymond had a two-run single that proved to be the game winner in the second inning, as Husson capped off the sweep with a 5-1 victory. Lebrun singled in the only run of the day for the visitors from Plymouth State in the fourth. McLeod added an RBI single in the third for the Eagles, and they capped off their scoring by getting two unearned runs in the fourth inning. Emily Rerick (4-3) won in the circle allowing one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Raymond and McLeod had two hits a piece. Lebrun, Mia Ly, and Emily Picard had two hits each for the Panthers, as they fall to 11-11 on the season playing out of the Little East Conference. Alyssa Wilson (2-2) was tagged with the pitching loss allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings.

Husson improves their record to 16-10 overall and will take their 4-0 NAC mark into a home conference doubleheader with UMaine-Farmington on Saturday beginning at noon.
