The Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics were both on the road continuing their first round playoff series on Friday night. The Bruins were looking to regain the lead in the best of seven, while the Celtics looked to take a 3-0 stranglehold.
At FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida- Four different players scored a goal, as the Boston Bruins took a 2-1 series lead over the Florida Panthers with a 4-2 win in game three. Boston got off to a good start early in the first period. A shot by Taylor Hall from outside of the right faceoff circle moving from right to left seemed to surprise Florida goaltender Alex Lyon, beating him glove side just inside the right post at 2:26 to make it 1-0. Both teams had a powerplay chance after the goal in the opening period, but the score remained the same after one. They extended the lead in the second, as a shot by Brad Marchand was tipped in near the front of the net by Charlie Coyle at 6:00. The Bruins played a much better game defensively, after many costly turnovers resulting in a 6-3 Florida win in game two. The Panthers only mustered 12 shots on goal through 40 minutes. David Pastrnak had the eventual game winner with a quick wristshot past Lyon at 8:32 of the third period, ending the night for the netminder. Nick Foligno made it 4-0 on a beautiful setup from Hall at 11:45. Florida got two back in the final 5:19 on a shorthanded marker by Gustav Forsling at 14:41 and an extra attacker tally by Sam Reinhart. Hall had a goal and an assist and Dmitry Orlov had two assists in the win. Linus Ullmark made 28 saves. The B’s played without Patrice Bergeron (upper body injury), while David Krejci and Connor Clifton were healthy scratches. Lyon stopped 23 shots in the loss for the Panthers, and Sergei Bobrovsky made eight saves in relief. Game 4 is set for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in Florida.
At State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia- Trae Young and Dejounte Murray combined for 57 points, as the Atlanta Hawks shot 56% from the floor to take a 130-122 win over the Boston Celtics in game three to cut their series deficit to 2-1. Boston hit nine three-pointers in the first quarter as they led by as many as nine and 37-33 after 12 minutes. The defense fell apart in the second quarter as Atlanta took over the lead for good by as many as 14, scoring 41 points in the period and held a 74-67 advantage at the half. Boston never was able to push back in front despite cutting it to one point several times early in the fourth. Jayson Tatum had a chance to tie it with a three-pointer with 58 seconds left to play, but it was no good and Young put it away for Atlanta nailing 4-4 from the free throw line in the closing seconds. Tatum would lead the way in the loss with his third double double in as many games in this series finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Marcus Smart had 24 points, three rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. Sixth man of the Year Award winner Malcolm Brogdon had 17 points, Jaylen Brown 15, Grant Williams 14, and Derrick White 11 points rounded out the double digit scorers for the C’s. Young had 32 points, six rebounds, and nine assists for the Hawks. Murray added 25 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Game four in Atlanta is a 7 p.m. tip time on Sunday night.
