Guy Perron, a former captain on the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team and a former coach at the school, passed away on Tuesday from a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Perron was 57 years old.
Perron played at UMaine from 1986-1990, where he was the captain on the 1988-89 and 89-90 teams. He registered 62 goals and 84 assists in 136 career games in Orono. He also had several different coaching stints with the Black Bears (assistant coach 1991-92, 94-95, 2003-04 and then head coach in 04-05 and 05-06, and associate head coach in 06-07 and 07-08). He also was head coach at Bangor High School in the 1992-93 and 93-94 seasons, an assistant at Dartmouth College in 1995-96 and 96-97, and was also a general manager/head coach with the Chicago Freeze (junior hockey) in the North American Hockey League from 1998-2003. The last job Perron held was a scout for the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL from 2008-14.
Perron was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021, where he and other community members started the Tee’d Off at Cancer Golf Benefit Tournament shortly after his diagnosis. Perron leaves behind his wife and three children.
