The Husson University softball team fell 9-3 on Thursday afternoon to host school #6 Tufts University in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at Spicer Field in Medford, Massachusetts. The Eagles will play again on Friday hoping to avoid being knocked out in the double elimination format.
Husson (30-13-1) was held without a hit over the first three innings, and Tufts scored a run in each of the first two frames and four more in the third to race out to a 6-0 lead. Down 7-0, the Eagles would get on the board on RBI singles by Tatyanna Biamby and Katie Raymond in the fifth inning. Julia Gregoire also hit a pinch hit solo homerun in the sixth. Raymond had two hits on the afternoon to lead the way, while McKenna Smith (20-6) suffered the loss in the circle allowing nine runs on 12 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Josie Steinberg, Emma Jacobson, and Kat Yuzefpolsky had two hits each for Tufts (38-4). Yuzefpols and Kaitlyn Perucci had two RBI a piece. Rachel Moore also hit a solo homer. Sophia DiCocco (14-2) gave up two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in the circle to earn the win for the Jumbos out of the NESCAC. Husson will play in the losers bracket (elimination game) on Friday afternoon at 1:30 against Cabrini University (29-13). Tufts will play Moravian University in the winners bracket.
