Husson baseball falls to Wheaton in Mitchell Regional; Eagles softball eliminated at Tufts Regional

The Husson baseball team began their NCAA Division III Regional Tournament on Friday morning at Mitchell College in Connecticut, while the Husson softball team was hoping to stay alive in win or go home elimination game at their regional in Massachusetts on Friday afternoon.

At Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut- The Husson baseball team would fall to #8 Wheaton College 11-3. The Lyons (38-6) got all they needed between the second and fourth innings. Tommy Ambrosone had a two-run single in the second, and then in the fourth Robert Wirtanen doubled in a run and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Kevin Matos (RBI double), Timmy Wagner (solo homerun), and Cavan Brady (two-run single) added run scoring hits. They got two more in the seventh on a passed ball and a bases loaded walk. Hunter Curtis had an RBI double and RBI single for Husson (24-18), while David York knocked in their third run with a single. Curtis, York, and Akira Warren led the Eagles with two hits each and Matt Wallingford (3-1) took the loss on the mound allowing six runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Brady led the Wheaton College offense with four hits and three RBI. Ryan McCarroll (9-1) earned the pitching win allowing just one run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings. The Eagles play an elimination game on Saturday morning at 8:30 against Tufts University (31-10).

At Spicer Field in Medford, Massachusetts (Tufts University Regional)- Avery Byrnes fired a no-hitter as Cabrini University sent Husson softball home for the season by a 4-0 score. Byrnes helped herself by driving in the only run the Cavaliers (30-13) needed with a bunt single that went for an RBI in the first inning. Another bunt single for an RBI in the second by Kelsey Huling made it 2-0 Cabrini, before Holly Smith ended the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Lydia Rice drew a pinch hit one out walk for the only baserunner of the day for the Eagles in the fourth inning. McKenna Smith (20-7) went the distance in the loss allowing four runs (three earned) with two walks and seven strikeouts. Byrnes (19-6) pitched her sixth no-hitter of the season striking out 15 in helping her team advance to another elimination game. Husson has their season end with a final record of 30-14-1 in what was their fifth straight NCAA Regional appearance.
