EAST CORINTH- Hayden Strout struckout 14 on the mound, and also drove in a run with a double on Monday afternoon in leading the Central Red Devils to a 2-1 Class C North baseball win over Bucksport at Central High School.
Strout helped his own cause when he hit a groundrule double to deep centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to score Jacoby Buzzard. Buzzard had led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then stole third base and would score on a sacrifice fly by Benjamin Speed to give Central a 2-0 lead, a lead they held until the seventh. He took care of the rest on the hill. Strout stuckout the side in the first two innings. Gavin Holyoke hit a groundrule double to left center with one out in the fourth for Bucksport, but the left hander escaped any damage when he struckout Brandon Elden looking and got Trent Goss to ground back to the mound. The Golden Bucks got a two out infield hit from Gunther Cyr in the fifth, but he was stranded there as Strout got another groundout back at him by Ayden Maguire. He once again struckout the side in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Elden got hit by a pitch to give Bucksport a baserunner. A throwing error by Strout on a pickoff play at first allowed Elden to get to third base. Goss grounded out to third to score Elden, and then with the bases empty Connor Fitch struckout swinging which would end the day for Strout at 110 pitches. Jackson Pollock came on to pitch and walked Silas Moore. Moore would get to second on a passed ball, but the Red Devils picked up the big win when Cyr flew out to center to end the game.
Strout went 6.2 innings to pick up victory allowing one run on three hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts. Pollock got the save. Central only had the one hit in improving their record to 6-7 on the season. Goss went 6.0 innings in the loss for 8-5 Bucksport, giving up two runs on one hit with one walk and seven strikeouts. Holyoke, Cyr, and Bo Provencher had the hits for the Golden Bucks. The Red Devils next play at Lee Academy on Tuesday, while Bucksport is at Washington Academy on Wednesday.
