The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees on Sunday night in New York 3-2 in 10 innings, winning their first series in almost a month since taking two out of three games on the road in San Diego back on May 19-21.
Justin Turner gave Boston (33-33) the early lead with a solo homerun to right centerfield in the top of the second inning. New York got a good break in the bottom of the second with two outs with two runners in scoring position, when a groundball by Jose Trevino up the middle looked to be an easy out but it hit the second base bag and deflected past Kike Hernandez for a two-run single to make it 2-1 Yankees. Jarren Duran evened the score for the Red Sox in the eighth with an RBI groundout, and the guests then would bring across the winning run in the 10th inning on a one out single by Hernandez to score pinch runner Adam Duvall. The Boston bullpen was solid in 3.0 innings backing up a strong effort from starter Brayan Bello. The combination of Nick Pivetta, Kenley Jansen, and Chris Martin didn’t allow a hit in the eighth, ninth, or 10th innings just giving up one walk.
Jansen (2-3) earned the win and Martin picked up his first save. Bello went the first 7.0 innings in his no-decision allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Duran and Hernandez had two hits each. Ron Marinaccio (2-3) took the loss in relief for New York. Clarke Schmidt gave up one run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in his start that lasted 5.1 innings for the 38-29 Yankees. Boston, who is just 7-13 in their last 20, returns to Fenway Park to open a six game homestand Monday night beginning with a three game series with the Colorado Rockies. Former Red Sox right hander Connor Seabold (1-2, 5.10 ERA) takes the mound in the opener for Colorado, while James Paxton (2-1, 3.81) toes the rubber for Boston with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. The Sox begin play on Monday in last place in the American League East, 14 games behind front running Tampa Bay and currently are four games out of the AL wildcard.
