Brayan Bello took a no-hitter into a scoreless eighth inning on Thursday night, but lost it as the first two batters singled in that frame ending his night on the hill and the Miami Marlins would end up sweeping a three game series from the Boston Red Sox with a 2-0 victory at Fenway Park.
Bello and Miami starter Jesus Luzardo matches zeroes over the first seven innings. In the eighth, Jean Segura ended the no-hit bid by the right hander with a single and Joey Wendle followed with another to right field to put runners on first and third with no outs. Chris Martin came into the game in relief and allowed the first hitter he faced Jon Berti to also single to center to drive in Segura to make it 1-0 Marlins. After Jesus Sanchez looped a broken bat single to left to load the bases, Boston limited the damage when Nick Fortes grounded to third and Rafael Devers came home for the force out and catcher Connor Wong threw to first for the 5-2-3 doubleplay. After an intentional walk to Luis Arraez, Martin struckout Jorge Soler swinging to prevent anymore runs. Kike Hernandez led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and was pinch run for by David Hamilton, but the Sox couldn’t crack the scoreboard as Wong popped out on a bunt and then Alex Verdugo along with Justin Turner both struckout swinging. Miami (48-34) added some insurance when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a one out solo homerun to center off Kenley Jansen in the ninth inning. A.J. Puk finished off the hosts for the save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts.
Bello (5-5) suffered the defeat after being charged with one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 7.0+ innings. Boston only had four hits on the night. Andrew Nardi (6-1) picked up the win for Miami in relief of Luzardo. Luzardo went the first 6.1 innings in his no-decision allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Puk earned his 13th save. Wendle had two hits, as the surging Marlins improved to 11-3 over their last 14 games. The Red Sox begin a three game series on the road with their A.L. East rival the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. Lefthander James Paxton (3-1, 3.19 ERA) is expected to toe the rubber in game one at 7:07 p.m., to be opposed by Toronto righthander Jose Berrios (8-5, 3.60). Boston is now 3-7 in their last 10 games and 40-42 on the season.
