THORNDIKE- The Sacopee Valley Hawks scored 38 second quarter points on Saturday afternoon, taking control of the game and going on to defeat the Mt. View Mustangs 46-26 in a small school 8-man high school football game.
The home standing Mustangs looked good early on in taking a 20 point lead. Wyatt Evensen took the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, but failed on the run on the two-point conversion. After an interception by Evensen of Sacopee Valley quarterback Tyler Easterbrooks, Dominic Nash scored on a one yard run with the conversion also no good and it was 12-0 Mt. View. Bo Spaulding extended the lead with a five yard TD run 46 seconds into the second quarter, and Chase Kenney scored a two-point run to push it out to 20-0. But some apparent game ending injuries to a few of the key players for the Mustangs including Evensen and Anthony Mathous changed the course of the game. Sacopee scored for the first time on a four yard scoring reception by Dylan Capano from Easterbrooks. Easterbrooks also converted a two-point run. The Hawks then recovered an onside kick, and Bradly Metcalf caught an 18 yard TD from Easterbrooks to slice it to 20-16. Another onside kick recovered by the guests would put them into the lead for good, as Capano punched in a four yard scoring run. Easterbrooks later would score on 66 and 43 yard runs, the second of which was after the third onside kick recovery of the period as Sacopee led 38-20 at the half. The Hawks put it away after the break, as Bradly Metcalf returned the third quarter kickoff 75 yards for six. Mt. View had the final scoring play of the day late in the third on a 35 yard pass from freshman quarterback Brandon Schanz to tightend Antonio Vieira.
After a slow start, Easterbrooks was the star of the game. The Sacopee junior QB finished with 185 yards rushing on 15 attempts with two touchdowns, and also was 9-17 passing for 138 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Capano had three catches for 22 yards and a score, while adding a four yard rushing TD. Bradly Metcalf caught a TD pass and had the kickoff return as well, and Brady Metcalf had four receptions for 90 yards. For Mt. View in the loss, Evensen before leaving with an undisclosed injury had two rushes for 34 yards, an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and an interception. Mathous had seven carries for 33 yards and a score, while Schanz went 5-13 passing for 54 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs stay at home next week to take on Maranacook, while the Hawks will battle on the road again when they visit Telstar with both contests scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
