Nic Visser threw for a pair of touchdowns, and Elijah Garnett rushed for over 100 yards with a score on Saturday afternoon in leading Husson University to a 28-14 non-conference football win over Norwich University in the season opener for both teams at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
Garnett gave Husson the lead with a two yard touchdown run with 5:02 left in the first quarter, before Norwich answered early in the second on a 23 yard scoring play from quarterback Aidan Sullian to wide receiver Will Thonton. The Eagles got the game winner 5:44 later, when Visser found Ja’Quan Myles for a 26 yard touchdown pass. The hosts added late third quarter and early four quarter scores on a 21 yard Ashton Navarrete scoring reception, and a Jed Lober two yard touchdown run to pull away.
Visser finished 19-26 passing for 188 yards and two scores in the win. Garnett had 20 attempts rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown. Lober added 14 runs for 65 yards and a TD. Myles had three receptions for 82 yards, including the game winning touchdown grab. Navarrete and Casey Cullen also had six catches each (60 yards, 40 yards). Tucker Buzzell led the defense with 11 total tackles (3 solo) and 2.5 for a loss. Tyrek Mann had two sacks. Sullivan went 13-22 for 103 yards and a touchdown in the loss for the Norwich Cadets. He was sacked three times. The NU run game was held in check, as they were outgained on the ground 168-30. Trevor Chase had the most catches and yards with eight grabs for 91 yards, while Thonton had five receptions for 41 yards and both of their touchdowns catching his second from backup Ryan O’Keefe halfway through the fourth quarter. Husson is on the road next Saturday when they travel to Massachusetts to take on Springfield College at 12 p.m.
