With the new 8-person league this year, the PVHS Lady Howlers soccer team have a revamped schedule and find themselves facing some unfamiliar foes. On Tuesday, the team traveled to Blue Hill to take on a new opponent George Stevens Academy and came away with a 6-1 victory.
Lila Cummings got the scoring started about nine minutes into the game, where she received a pass from Lauren Veino near midfield. After sidestepping a few defenders, she found herself inside the 18 yard line where she cut the ball back to her right foot and scored past goalie Mya Schildroth. About three minutes later Cummings struck again, this time coming from a direct kick after drawing a foul. The straightaway shot went over the keepers hands, off the crossbar, and past the goal line. The third goal started from an Aubrey Dionne cross from the left wing that went to the feet of Brooke Champion. Brooke passed it across to Rylee Moulton, who found a corner with her left foot. The final first half goal was similar, this time starting with an Ellie Austin cross from the right side to Champion. Champion sent a beautiful drop pass to Cummings, who shot it in the lower right corner of the net to complete the hat trick.
The game stayed 4-0 until about 10 minutes left in the game, when Cummings lofted a high corner kick toward the six yard line to Austin. Austin elevated and headed the airborne ball into the right corner for the spectacular goal. Veino would round out the PVHS scoring by chipping a 25 yard shot over Schildroth into the net. GSA didn’t quit, and was able to prevent the shutout by scoring with about two minutes remaining, off the foot of Sophie Landrum.
The Lady Howlers improved to 3-0 on the young season, and will host Mattanawcook Academy under the lights Thursday night. Brooklynn Raymond stopped 7 of 10 shots for Penobscot Valley. Schildroth faced 22 shots for the Eagles, and turned away nine of them. GSA drops to 1-3 and travels to MDI on Thursday.
