At Howland Thursday night, Ellie Austin contributed to both goals as the PVHS Howlers girls soccer team defeated the Mattanawcook Lynx by a score of 2-0.
Both teams came into the contest 3-0 on the young season, with PVHS outscoring their opponents 15-3 in the first three games. MA had a staggering 20-3 goal differential to start the year.
Mattanawcook Academy was doing a good job of bottling up the Howlers’ attack right from the start, as they were having a hard time getting good looks at the net. About 16 minutes in however, an outside cross from senior Aubrey Dionne found Ellie Austin behind the shifted defense. Ellie trapped the ball and quickly put it in the lower right corner for the score.
Penobscot Valley would get a little breathing room at the twenty minute mark in the second half, which started with a Lynx goal kick. Austin attacked the airborne ball with her body and once again quickly got it to her feet and sent a pass across the 18. Sophomore Rylee Moulton approached the ball and fired a rocket into the right upper ninety of the net for a 2-0 lead, which would end the scoring.
The Lady Howlers improved to 4-0 and will travel to Calais on Monday. Goalie Brooklynn Raymond had five saves on seven shots.
Kaelyn Cloukey registered 12 saves on 21 shots for Mattanawcook Academy. The Lynx dropped to 3-1 and will play at Bangor Christian on Tuesday.
