The UMaine Field Hockey and women’s soccer teams both hosted America East games on Sunday in Orono. Field Hockey was looking to start conference play 2-0 after a shutout win over the University of California-Davis on Friday, while soccer was opening up conference play after finishing their non-conference schedule unbeaten.
At the Maine Field Hockey Complex- Brynn Dzengelewski scored her first career goal 4:44 into double overtime to give Maine a 5-4 win over Stanford. Molly Mackesy and Saylor Kuefler scored at 4:43 and 5:21 of the first quarter to give the Black Bears an early 2-0 lead.

The Cardinal (2-6, 0-2 America East) though scored the final three goals of the first half by Star Horlock, Scout Butler, and Esther Pottebaum to take a 3-2 advantage at the break. The second tally by Mackesy 4:29 into the third quarter tied it up, and the second marker of the afternoon by Kuefler 4:50 into the fourth regained the lead for Maine at 4-3. Stanford was able to send it to overtime when they got awarded a penalty stroke late, and Butler converted with just 15 seconds left. After neither team could find the back of the cage in the first 10 minute overtime period, the winner by Dzengelewski in double OT was off an assist by Mackesy. Mackesy got it to the freshman just inside the circle, and Cardinal goal Daisy Ford came way out of her net to challenge. Dzengelewski got it just under the netminder as it trickled in across the goal line to end it. Mackesy led all players with two goals and two assists in the Black Bears win. Mallory Drayer had two saves in net playing the first half, while Jayde Temby played the final 44:44 and stopped five shots allowing just one goal. Butler had two goals and Horlock had a goal and an assist for Stanford in the defeat. Ford made five saves. Maine improves to 4-4, 2-0 America East and will host UMass-Lowell on Friday at 3 p.m.

At Mahaney Diamond- Maine women’s soccer overcame two-one goal deficits, getting two tallies late to slip past Vermont 3-2 in the America East opener.
After allowing the opening goal to the Catamounts’ Lauren DeGroot in the 39th minute of the first half, the Black Bears tied it off the foot of Abby Kraemer just 24 seconds into half number two.

Vermont (5-3-0, 0-1 America East) re-took the lead when DeGroot scored her second of the afternoon on an assist by Bailey Ayer in the 76th minute. Maine had some heroics though late scoring twice in the 87th minute as Luise Reinwald had the equalizer with her first collegiate goal, and Jordane Pinette netted the winner just 16 seconds later. Both goals were assisted by Kristina Kelly to keep the Black Bears unbeaten (6-0-3, 1-0). The nine game unbeaten streak ties the best start to a season in program history with the 2006 team (8-0-1). Kutzinski made two saves in net in the win, while Kylee Carafoli stopped five for the Catamounts in the loss. Maine, who now holds a 14-game home unbeaten streak (8-0-6) dating back to October 2021, is on the road at Albany next Sunday.
