Husson sets program record, routing Dean College in non-conference football action

September 29, 2023

The Husson University Eagles racked up 651 yards of total offense, with 409 of them yards on the ground on Friday night in a 75-17 rout of Dean College in a non-conference Division III football game played at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.

After an thrilling 50-49 victory in a back and forth tilt with Anna Maria College last Saturday, Husson took the excitement out of this one pretty early on. Nason Berthelette returned the opening kickoff for the Eagles 55 yards to the Dean 31-yard line, and a 15 yard penalty on the Bulldogs moved it to the 16. The first play from scrimmage was a 16-yard touchdown run by Elijah Garnett for a quick 6-0 lead. It took the guests just 2:50 to take their only lead at 7-6 on a 33-yard TD pass from Isaac Sisneros to Dy’riece Smith. Husson took over after that, taking the lead for good 1:52 later when quarterback Nic Visser found one of his favorite targets in Cullen Casey for a 13-yard passing score. Garnett later scored on a 70-yard run, and Visser hit Casey again for an eight yard touchdown to extend their advantage to 27-7 after one quarter. The Eagles led 40-14 at the break helped by another long TD run by Garrett who had over 200 yards on the ground in the first half, and continued to roll in the second half as well outscoring Dean 35-3 to set a program record for points scored in one game.

Garnett had quite the night, finishing with 13 carries for 250 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. His 77-yard scoring run in the second quarter was the fifth longest in Husson history, and his 19.2 average yards per rush in the game broke a seven year old record held previously by John Smith in 2017. Jed Lober added five rushes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Visser went 12-16 passing for 145 yards and three scores. Bangor native Max Clark also got into the game at quarterback going 4-4 for 97 yards and throwing for a touchdown. Ja’Quan Myles and Casey both had three catches for 59 and 30 yards respectively. Casey had two touchdowns, and Caleb Solomon also caught another from Clark. Tucker Buzzell led the defense with 10 total tackles, 2.5 for a loss, and one sack. Ricky Hendrix and Evan Bourget also had one interception each. Sisneros finished 29-49 passing for 286 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the loss for Dean College, who falls to 1-4. Smith had four catches for 71 yards and both touchdowns for the Bulldogs. The Eagles, winners of three in a row, finish the non-conference portion of their schedule at 4-1 and will have a week off before starting Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday, October 14 when they host Curry College at 1 p.m.
