PVHS girls race out to early lead, handle Woodland 9-1

September 29, 2023

At Woodland Friday, the PVHS Lady Howlers scored five goals in the first 23 minutes on their way to the 9-1 girls soccer victory.

Sophomore Rylee Moulton added to her team-leading goal total, registering a hat trick in the first fifteen minutes. The first two were set up by beautiful passes by Ellie Austin, and the third came from the foot of Lila Cummings. Ashlyn St. Cyr was the next Lady Howler to score, as she received a pass by midfield and dribbled all the way into the 18 yard line where she put her shot past keeper Emma Bailey. Senior Mia Neal scored her first goal since her sophomore year to make it 5-0, off an assist by Lauren Veino. Finally, Cummings drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick which she converted for the 6-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Cummings scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season, one which was assisted by Austin and the other unassisted. With an 8-0 lead, Penobscot Valley looked like they were on their way to having the game stopped at the 20-minute mark due to the new mercy rule. However, Woodland sophomore Karleigh Smith scored a breakaway goal just 24 seconds before the mark extending the game further. The score remained 8-1 until there was 13:07 left, when Moulton took a pass from Veino that she put into the back of the net  to register her 19th goal of the season to end the scoring.

PVHS improved to 8-0 on the season and will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Calais to play at noon Saturday. Brooklynn Raymond saved 2 of 3 shots.

Woodland dropped to 4-4 and will face off against East Grand at home on Monday.  Bailey stopped 12 of 35 shots for the Lady Dragons.
